SELF-CARE IDEAS FOR DEALING WITH A BAD DAY

As humans, we all have those days where we just feel down.

Going through bad days, sometimes weeks, is a pretty normal part of life. However, on occasion, certain factors can cause us to go through bad months or even years at a time. Our current global pandemic is the prime example of a long-term “bad” time.

If you’re currently living in one of the hardest-hit areas, like me, it can seem especially tough to find the light. But despite the location, it is completely valid for everyone to feel sad, lonely, anxious, and emotional during this time.

With all of that said, the best thing you can do during those hard times is love and embrace the state you’re in. Most of us will try to fight against any emotions that make us uncomfortable. However, the keys for overcoming those feelings are simple…

1) Get Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable
Allow yourself to feel & go through your emotions

2) Practice Self-Love
Talk to yourself with kindness

3) Incorporate Self-Care Rituals
Create a list of things that make you feel happy and/or relaxed & add them into your daily routine

In order to give you a head start, I have provided you with my favorite self-care rituals below. Feel free to use/adapt any of these to fit into your own life & schedule.

Detox Bath

If you enjoy the occasional bath, you will LOVE this. A detox bath is a natural way to remove toxins from the body & lower stress levels. Epsom salt and essential oils are two common ingredients, but you can change up your recipe depending on your needs.

Gratitude Journal

Journaling is my #1 favorite tool for dealing with stress. While there are hundreds of topics to write about, I think gratitude is the most simple & effective. Challenge yourself to write 5-10 things you are grateful for any time you’re feeling down, and refer back to it throughout the day as needed.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy comes in several different forms and has all kinds of amazing benefits. It can help with anxiety, sleep, pain, headaches, illness, and more. I personally use a diffuser, and have found the most success in running it for a couple hours before bed. I blend/switch the oils depending on my needs, but my favorites are lavender, chai, orange, peppermint, and chamomile.

Meditate

Meditation is a nightly ritual for me, and is such an incredible relaxation tool. If you’re a total beginner, don’t worry, there are tons of apps out there that offer guided meditations. Start out with just 5 minutes a day & then go up from there when you feel comfortable.

Get Cozy

This one is by far the easiest way to practice self-care. Get into your favorite pajama set, find a cozy spot, and watch a movie or read a book. Try to aim for something uplifting in order to keep your stress levels down, but aside from that just sit back & enjoy!
